Feminine Gays

There's this stereotype that all gay men are feminine. But how true is it? People usually think this way because of the media. The media potrays gays as girly and wimpy. It's also thought that gay men want to be like women.

feminine gay

For those of us who watch America's Next Top Model, we know that Mr Jay, and Miss Jay, are well .... gay. They are both quite feminine and they both work in the modeling industry. That is another stereotype that occurs. Men who work in the modeling/designing industry are gay. You see the way they're posed in the picture, you can immediately tell they are gay. That's why the media plays an influence on the stereotypes.
Masculine Gay
Masculine gays are quite unheard of in the media world. As I've mentioned above, you usually see the media potray gays as feminine. But what happened to the masculine ones? I can only think of ONE masculine gay, but I'm not sure if I can even count that because it's only a rumor. Vin Diesel. If he's gay, then he's a masculine gay. If he's not gay, I appologize to you Vin.
So what you think? Agree? Disagree?

  1. Well I haven't seen alot of gays, but I have two friends who are homosexual. They aren't feminine to the extreme, but they are more emotional, and likes affection. I mean, anyone can have these two qualities right?

I guess it really has to depend on the person himself. Why not be well-built and be gay at the same time? Although we view gays as weak and soft people(common stereotype), I feel that in this more open society, we can easily accept any deviants, or at least anticipate it and go 'why not?'.

  2. Actually, I've always imagine Gays to being .... well feminine and weak, until I came across an associate of my friend and thought otherwise. Stereotyping of gays, can actually even occur for individuals who aren't even gay but just seem that way.
Most men for a fact, suffer from homophobia classifying anyone who fits under the sissy..wuss... looks too skinny and his shirt is too tight category and immediately classify them as being Gay. No doubt out poor society, suffers from a lack of open mindedness... Anyway back to topic (: lol, I seriously don't think we should associate all gay men to being skinny and feminine, some are well built and isnt this all up to the individuals one opinion?? Who are we to judge them honestly...

  3. how do one tell a gay from other men? there may or not be many difference to how a gay dresses up as compared to normal men. just relying on a still picture of a man in an unconventional pose does not equate to him being a homosexual. there might be some reasons in which he is posing in that stance.
one of the reasons could be he is an actor and he is playing the role of a gay in that tv sitcom.
all the hype about gays being feminine and people subscribing to this idea shows that we have failed to look at things from different angles. if you consider gays to be feminine only, does that not mean that they need a more emotionally stable guy or one who is more lobing, caring? if TLC is just what gays look out for, then to whom do they find such TLCs? of course, it has to be in another guy since he is gay in the first place to begin with right?
one cannot afford to subscribe one hundred percent to what the media and society says. we must take a look at things from so many other perspectives before we pass a comment. is it not a shame to be fooled in this area at this age?
this episode shows that the media is very powerful in telling us what to think.
wih the category of metrosexual guys become larger, the distinction of fashion sense is fast becoming a gray area to identify gays just like that.

  4. when i watch ANTM, i think most gays are feminine. they usually have acute fashion sense, confident and very talented.

when i watch JDMA, it turns out this really macho model is a gay. that broke out of the stereotype. i guess gays are just guys who like guys. i mean, in a relationship one has to be the man and another the girly one right?

i have gay friends myself. i have very feminine gay friends and more macho ones that charm girls with a smile.

in most drama and movies, when they depict a fashion designer, modelling managers as feminine guys. then they will be allocated dialogues commenting that a guy is hot. then we know they're gay. and we get this kind of character everytime. little wonder we STAMP feminine guys as gays.

we should give metrosexual guys and feminine guys the benefit of doubt and not believe all the Tv has to say.

  5. There are many generalization about gay men. For some, the only exposure to homosexuality is through the media or word-of-mouth. Unfortunately, many stereotypes are spread about them. One of the most common is the myth and misconception that gay men are feminine which is not true like you very explicitly demonstrated in your article IDA! :)
Unfortunately, many media outlets portray gay men as overly effeminate. As with the mannerisms of heterosexuals, the degree of masculinity varies amongst homosexuals. The belief that all gay men desire to be women or are feminine is merely a generalization. Those within the gay community are just as diverse as any other group.
